STRONG FAMILY HISTORY AND GENEALOGY by Robert T. Strong, Jr.

      256. Martin STRONG was born about 1730 in Hanover Co., VA. He died before 1781 in Hanover Co., VA. He was probably christened in St. Paul's Parish of the Church of England / Anglican Church, the vital records of which were not preserved. His marriage and his death and burial should have been recorded in the vital records of St. Martin's Parish of the Church of England. Those records, also, were not preserved.

This was Martin STRONG, 1st, the elder of two who resided in St. Martin's Parish, Hanover County, VA. The elder Martin Strong was a generation older than Martin STRONG, 2nd. The family of the younger Martin Strong settled in St. Martin's Parish (as they were in the same tax precinct with John STANLEY, the eldest) around 1765, as proved by the Revolutionary War Pension Application of John STRONG, brother of the younger Martin Strong. This John Strong was residing in Fluvanna County when he filed for his pension in the 1830s. The two Martin Strongs were possibly first cousins, but no records to prove it survived the destruction Hanover County records during the War Between the States. Church records did not survive either. The older Martin Strong had an uncle named George STRONG, christened 1703, who is unaccounted for and who, theoretically, could have been the father of the younger Martin Strong and his 12 siblings. The problem with this theory is that the veteran of the Revolutionary War, John Strong, stated he was born in Cumberland County, VA, about 1757. The only adult Strong of record in that county at that time was a John STRONG who was involved in a suit.

Quaker records prove that Ann Stanley, daughter of John Stanley the eldest, married a Mr. Strong in late 1753 or early 1754. The only two male Strongs of this time period in Hanover County whose wives have not been identifed were Martin Strong and Sherwood Strong, brothers, as proved by the sworn affidavits of another brother, John Strong. Sherwood Strong, was a veteran of the French and Indian Wars, as was John Strong, who stated that Sherwood had died before 1779 and that Martin Strong was heir at law of Sherwood Strong [and thus eligible to receive a land grant based on Sherwood's military service]. Anne Strong was obviously widowed by 1781 when she first appears in Goochland County, VA, records as a head of household; that is, Martin Strong had deceased also by 1781.

Martin Strong owned land in the western part of Hanover County in 1763 and probably earlier [but no earlier record has yet been found]. As a land owner and farmer, Martin Strong would have been exempted from military service during the French and Indian War.

That Martin Strong was a son of John Strong, II, of St. Martin's Parish, Hanover County, was proved by the store accounts of Col. John Chiswell, which show Martin Strong making purchases to the account of the estate of John Strong, deceased, in 1751.

The affidavit filed with the Goochland County, VA, Court by John Strong, brother of Sherwood and Martin Strong, in 1779 and again in a corrected affidavit in 1780, prove that Sherwood Strong was not the husband of Ann Stanley Strong. If Sherwood Strong had been married and had surviving children, particularly sons, then Martin Strong would not have inherited Sherwood's military land grant rights. Ann definitely had children, including sons, so she could not be the widow of Sherwood Strong. That leaves only one person who could have been the husband of Ann Stanley Strong: Martin Strong, 1st. Martin Strong was of the right age, was at the right place, and was there at the right time, to have married Ann Stanley.

      257. Ann STANLEY was born about 1732 in Hanover Co., VA. Although her father was a member of the Society of Friends (Quakers), no record of Ann's birth has been found in Quaker records.

In 1754 Ann Stanley Strong was excommunicated from the Cedar Creek Meeting House, Society of Friends, Cedar Creek, Hanover County, VA, because she married Mr. Strong, who was not a Quaker. She was counseled by the church but refused to publically repent and condemn her marriage to Mr. Strong. She likely affiliated with the Church of England until the Revolution, after which her family was affilated with the Baptist denomination, particularly for the weddings of Ann Strong's children.

Ann Stanley Strong died after 1803, possibly in Goochland County, but more likely she was the older woman in the home of her son, John Strong, in Buckingham Co., VA, at the time of the 1810 census.

Her name was spelled "Anne" in most civil records, but she signed her name "Ann" in 1781 when she consented to the wedding of a daughter who was under the age of 21.

The children of Mrs. Ann Stanley Strong were identified primarily through tax records and marriage records in Goochland County, VA, but also from other sources, such as deeds. This is a reconstructed or theoretical family, as no family records are known to exit.

      i. [Mr. Unknown] STRONG is possibly a child of Mrs. Ann Stanley Strong. This male was probably born before 1760 [and if he was a son of Mrs. Ann Stanley Strong he was probably born in St. Martin's Parish, Hanover Co., VA]. This father apparently died before 1790 [possibly in Goochland Co., VA], as evidenced by the "binding out" as an apprentice of James STRONG, a minor son of [Mrs.?] Rachel STRONG, who was apparently destitute. No other record of Rachel Strong has been found. Records of a James Strong are later found in Gibson County, TN, about the time that Thomas STRONG, son of Mrs. Ann Stanley Strong, settled in Gibson County.

ii. Nancy STRONG was born after 1761 probably in St. Martin's Parish, Hanover Co., VA. She died after 1816 in Goochland Co., VA, when she was engaged to marry for her third husband, Charles JOHNSON. She was previously married to William CARRELL, who was the father of her children, and Bartholomew TURNER.

      128 iii. Sherwood STRONG, 3rd.

iv. Mary STRONG was born after 1773, probably in St. Martin's Parish, Hanover Co., VA. She married James LOGAN on 15 DEC 1794 in Goochland County, VA; this couple has not been traced.

      v. Mastin STRONG was born about 1774, probably in St. Martin's Parish, Hanover Co., VA. He died on 31 JAN 1866 in Randolph Co. [now Cleburne Co.], AL. Mastin had previously resided for over 40 years in eastern Tennessee counties, including Jefferson County and Bradley County. He was a veteran of the War of 1812 and received a military land bounty grant in Randolph Co., now Cleburne County, Alabama, in the 1850s. Mastin's second wife, mother of his children, and widow, Rebecca, possibly McCormack, applied for a Widow's Pension based on the military service of Mastin Strong.

vi. John STRONG was born before 1776, probably in St. Martin's Parish, Hanover Co., VA. He died after 1840 in Franklin Co., AL. He had previously resided in Buckingham County, VA, and in Rutherford County, TN.

vii. Thomas STRONG was born about 1776 in probably St. Martin's Parish, Hanover Co., VA. He died after 1850 possibly in Gibson Co., TN. No record of him or his wife has been found after the 1850 census, when he was about 74 years of age.
